  17. ------------------

  19. Welcome to Aminet.  Aminet is a set of interconnected FTP sites and other
  20. file accessing services for Amiga software.  It is structured differently
  21. from most other FTP sites so please read below instructions carefully.  Even
  22. more important:  Read new/README.BEFORE.UPLOAD before uploading anything, or
  23. your upload is in danger of being deleted.  Wherever not mentioned otherwise,
  24. pub/aminet/ is the path for the files described.
  25.  
  26. If you are new to FTP, you'll find most of your questions answered in the
  27. text info/start/FTP-Help.txt on wuarchive which is also posted to the
  28. newsgroup comp.sys.amiga.introduction bi-weekly.  The archivers needed to
  29. unpack the files stored here can be found in util/arc/, the archivers
  30. themselves are self-extracting (in .run format) in most cases, ie.  start
  31. them and they'll unpack automatically when you run them.

  33. The program to decompress the software on Aminet is util/arc/LhA_e138.run
  34. on wuarchive. (Many mirrors don't have it anymore since it's old). It's
  35. self-extracting, run it on an Amiga to decompress it.

  38. 2. Finding out what's new
  39. -------------------------
  40.  
  41. Once you're in pub/aminet/, you can receive the file RECENT for a list
  42. of the last seven day's uploads. The newest files are on the top of the
  43. list. In FTP, you can type 'get RECENT -' or 'get RECENT |more' to see
  44. the new files. Interesting files also found in CHARTS.
  45.  
  46. Once you see a file that interests you, cd to the appropriate directory
  47. and have a look at the according .readme file. There you'll usually find
  48. a more extensive description. Based on that you may choose to download
  49. the file (but never forget to type 'bin' in FTP before you start!). Also,
  50. a copy of all recent files can be found in the directory recent/.

  54. 3. Finding a specific file
  55. --------------------------

  57. Before you start looking, you should be aware that not all Aminet sites
  58. are complete. Most delete older files. So if you don't find something at
  59. your 'home' mirror, use one of the big sites that keep everything online
  60. like ftp.wustl.edu, ftp.uni-paderborn.de or ftp.doc.ic.ac.uk
  61.  
  62. To do a search, download the file INDEX.Z, uncompress it and search for
  63. the name or description you've been looking for. Under UNIX, you'd hit
  64. CTRL-Z in FTP after the download, type 'zcat INDEX.Z | fgrep -i foo'
  65. in order to look for 'foo' and then type 'fg' to return to FTP. Note:
  66. Files with an asterisk * in front of the description are not available
  67. on that site, refer to one of the complete sites.

  69. You may use the version from info/index/ if your terminal is capable of 
  70. showing more than 80 characters per line. This one doesn't truncate the
  71. short descriptions and includes an age column.

  73. Better search mechanisms exist through WWW, gopher and email (see below).

  75. If you were looking for something on Aminet but only found it elsewhere,
  76. please do everyone a favor and upload it to Aminet to make the file easier 
  77. to find for the next ones.

  81. 4. Directory structure
  82. ----------------------

  84. Sometimes you are looking for a certain category of file without knowing
  85. a name. You then best go by directory. The directories within /pub/aminet/ 
  86. are:

  102. lists the files that exist on that site, not the ones available elsewhere
  103. on Aminet.

  106. 5. Mirror sites
  107. ---------------
  108.  
  109. These are the members of Aminet and have the files from here.  All mirrors
  110. have the new files but most delete old files, however ftp.wustl.edu,
  111. ftp.uni-paderborn.de and ftp.doc.ic.ac.uk  keep all files.  Whenever
  112. possible, use the mirror that is the closest to your place.  Most mirrors
  113. get updated three times a day.

  141. 6. Accessing Aminet on the Internet

  144. There are many other ways than FTP to access Aminet. On the Internet:
  145.  
  146. - ADT. This is a front end for FTP that allows easy access to Aminet. Get
  147.   it from misc/unix/adt*.c and compile it on your UNIX box by typing
  148.   'sh adt.c'
  149.  
  150. - WWW. Mosaic or Lynx are a very decent way to access Aminet. Try the
  151.   URLs http://ftp.wustl.edu/~aminet/ or http://ftp.eunet.ch/~aminet/
  152.   where you can also find pointers to other Aminet sites with WWW
  153.   support.
  154.  
  155. - FSP. Aminet Files can be downloaded from the FSP site ftp.luth.se at
  156.   port 6969. ftp.wustl.edu and ftp.doc.ic.ac.uk have FSP on port 21, 
  157.   but can't be reached from everywhere (just try). Uploads are accepted
  158.   at wustl and luth.
  159.  
  160. - Telnet. ftp.doc.ic.ac.uk strikes again. You can telnet to 146.169.2.1
  161.   and log in as 'sources', which gives you a UNIX account where you can
  162.   download the files on src using commands like 'sz' and 'kermit', or
  163.   just browse around.
  164.  
  165. - NFS. The only Aminet site that allows NFS mounting of the archives is
  166.   ftp.wustl.edu. FTP there and read the details in /README.NFS
  167.  
  168. - IRC. On Internet Relay Chat, you can talk to various server robots like
  169.   Mama, LitBot and MerBot, to do queries and retrievals. Find out more
  170.   about them using '/msg mama help', for example.
  171.  
  172. - Finger. To find out what's been uploaded to Aminet within the last
  173.   week, enter 'finger aminet@ftp.wustl.edu' or 'finger aminet@ftp.eunet.ch'

  175. - Gopher. Gopher is specially supported by several Aminet sites. Just 
  176.   type 'gopher <sitename>' or 'gopher -p <startpoint> <sitename>'.

  185. 7. Accessing Aminet without Internet

  188. - CD-ROM. Aminet CD 5 and up are available from Stefan Ossowski, Germany
  189.   (stefano@tchest.e.eunet.de) or Fred Fish (orders@amigalib.com). The 
  190.   CD costs DM 25 or US$ 20. You can also buy the complete Aminet as of
  191.   Jan 95 on 4 CDs for DM60 or US$ 40. For further details, have a look at
  192.   docs/misc/CD-Orders.txt.

  194. - Get internet access. Certainly the most comfortable way to access
  195.   Aminet but sometimes expensive. Some Internet providers are:

  203. - Aminet mailserver. The Aminet mail server can do various things for you,
  204.   like doing finds and accepting uploads, but it does not send out 
  205.   binaries. Send HELP to aminet-server@wuarchive.wustl.edu to find out
  206.   more.

  208. - Bin mailserver. The Aminet site src.doc.ic.ac.uk has an email server
  209.   that sends out uuencoded binaries. Send a message with HELP in the body
  210.   to ftpmail@doc.ic.ac.uk or ftpmail@ftp.luth.se . You can also use 
  211.   ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com to retrieve files from any Aminet site, but 
  212.   please use an American one to save bandwidth. Send HELP there for 
  213.   information, too. Germans try ftpmail@uni-paderborn.de , Canadians
  214.   send HELP to MRCserv@MtRoyal.AB.CA .

  217.   more phone numbers than we can mention here, call to see a list of

  299. - Anonymous UUCP. In Germany, you can access the Aminet files at the
  300.   phone numbers of Brainwave BBS (see above) using the following entry.
  301.   Download the file "Aminet:INFO" for more information.

  303.   In Switzerland you can use the Alphanet BBS, ~/archives/aminet,
  304.   with the login nuucp.

  306. - FIDO. If you want to file-request Aminet files, you can do so by 
  307.   requesting the file INFO from 2:246/2006.0. The BBSes which have
  308.   a FIDO node number mentioned above allow file requests.

  310. - Mailing lists. If you want to get the list of new uploads mailed every
  311.   week, send a mail with 'SUBSCRIBE aminet-weekly foo@bar.edu' in the 
  312.   body to listserv@wunet.wustl.edu or if you want daily updates, just use
  313.   'SUBSCRIBE aminet-daily' instead. Replace foo@bar.edu with your email
  314.   address, of course. Keep the welcome mail in case you forget how to 
  315.   unsubscribe...

  317. - Usenet. A list of recent uploads is posted every week to the newsgroups
  318.   comp.sys.amiga.misc and de.comp.sys.amiga.archive.
  319.  
  320. - EZINFO. This is an internet BBS in Switzerland. Here you can download by
  321.   Kermit or ZMODEM, but you need to be verified to become user. Modem dial 
  322.   01 251 20 02, then type 'telnet b050' to connect to EZINFO. Also try
  323.   telnet kometh.ethz.ch and 'call b050' from internet.

  325. - Aminet-on-disk. You can order single Aminet files (3 DM per disk)
  326.   or per-directory subscriptions (2 DM per disk) from Martin Schulze,

  328.   email masc@coli.uni-sb.de . Send 3 DM in stamps or $2 to get an
  329.   index disk with instructions.

  335. 8. Copyright status and disclaimer

  338. While the files from Aminet are freely distributable, the collection is
  339. Copyright 1995 Urban D. Mueller. Making a CD-ROM with files from this
  340. collection or mirroring it on a regular basis requires permission
  341. from the administrators. That permission will be granted to mirrors
  342. if they provide an upload facility. If you as an uploader do not like
  343. this policy, don't upload or have your uploads removed. The policy
  344. is subject to change without notice.

  346. The administrators of Aminet give no warranties concerning the files
  347. stored.  Use at your own risk.  Specifically, we cannot guarantee that the
  348. programs are virus-free, uncorrupted, freely distributable or even useful
  349. in any way, although we do our best to ensure the above.

  352. 9. Background information
  353. -------------------------
  354.  
  355. - History
  356.  
  357.   Aminet was founded by members of ICU (computer science students' club) in
  358.   Zurich, Switzerland, using an A3000UX donated by Commodore Switzerland.  In
  359.   the beginning it was one FTP site among many, but when the formerly biggest
  360.   site (ab20.larc.nasa.gov) shut down, people started adopting amiga.physik
  361.   as the replacement.  In order to share the burden both performance- and
  362.   network load wise, two mirror sites were installed.  The new 1GB harddisk
  363.   donated by Walnut Creek and the user community allowed us to keep all old
  364.   files, while at the same time number of mirror FTP sites increased
  365.   constantly to currently 10.  Today, Aminet is the leading Internet source
  366.   for Amiga software, giving authors a far-reaching distribution medium and
  367.   the user community a place to look for both new and old freely
  368.   distributable software.

  373.   Please direct reports about corrupt, illegal or infected files immediately
  374.   to aminet@ftp.wustl.edu (do not rely on someone else doing it!). People
